Data and stata commands
- Tables from excel to Latex
- reg3hdfe (a stata command for regression models with 3-way fixed effects, successor to reg2hdfe)
- grinter (a stata command for graphing marginal effects of interacted variables, such as these)
- kountry (a stata command for merging dataset with different country identifiers)
- Graphs in Stata (how to do any type of graph)
- WDI data and maps in Stata (here)
- WITS or Comtrade (for trade and tariff data). Here's how to get it straight into stata.
- Corruption data (World Governance Indicators)
- Global Migrant Origins data (200 x 200 matrix)
- Democracy and other indicators (via Pippa Norris)
- Google Insight (compare search volume patterns across specific regions, time frames)
- Doing Business (data on how hard it is to do business in some places)
- Make nice charts, inlcuding heatmaps, using google docs. The chart wizard is sweet as well.
Incredible toaster (trade and development)
I once bought a new toaster at Target. It cost me $6.33. How is it possible that it cost as little as $6.33? How can a "toaster with more than 400 components and sub-components, made from nearly 100 different materials", including oil for plastic, cost as little as $6.33? As Tim Harford writes, "for no effort and very little money, we can buy a toaster and enjoy the global efforts of an uncounted workforce, and the accumulated knowledge of the centuries that the toaster embodies".
